The Story Behind the Serial

Alexandre Dumas published Les Frères corses in 1844, and the story proved durable enough to outlast almost everything else he wrote outside the big novels. At its center are Louis and Lucien de Franchi — twin brothers who were conjoined at birth and, even after separation, retain an uncanny bond. Each one feels the other's physical pain and emotional distress across any distance. Dumas set their story against two sharply different worlds: the tradition-bound culture of Corsica, where vendettas were a matter of family honor, and the sophisticated social world of Paris, where different rules applied. The tension between those two settings gave the material a built-in dramatic engine that adapted well to serialized storytelling.

The radio serial ran to 52 episodes, structured as numbered chapters running from Chapter 1 onward, which meant listeners followed an extended narrative arc rather than a self-contained weekly story. That format suited the material. A vendetta and its consequences don't resolve in a single broadcast; they unfold over time, and the chapter structure kept the audience invested across the full run.

A Story That Traveled

Before it reached radio, the Dumas novella had already moved through nearly every popular storytelling medium available. Dion Boucicault adapted it for the stage in 1852, and that theatrical version became a standard of the Victorian repertory. Film adaptations began appearing as early as 1898 and continued turning up on screen through the following decades. A Lux Radio Theatre broadcast on February 14, 1938 offered a standalone radio treatment of the same material — separate from this serialized run — which suggests the story had enough name recognition to attract a major anthology program before the chapter serial was produced.

The evidence surrounding the serial's origins is somewhat mixed. Catalog records associate it with an Australian production, with recording metadata pointing to around 1945, while at least one OTR reference places the series in the 1930s. The chapter-numbered episode format and the 52-episode count are consistent across multiple catalogs, but a precise premiere date hasn't been confirmed. What's clear is that wherever and whenever the serial was made, it was treating the Dumas source material as adventure territory — not literary adaptation in any stiff sense, but a running story with heroes, a vendetta, and the unusual device of two men who share each other's suffering.

What Survives

Fifty-two episodes are in known circulation, identified by chapter number. That's a substantial run for any radio serial, and the survival of this many chapters from what appears to have been a regional or international production — rather than a major American network program — makes it an interesting piece of the broader OTR record. The Classics Illustrated comic series ran its own adaptation of The Corsican Brothers in March 1945 (Issue #20), which speaks to how widely the Dumas story was circulating in popular culture during roughly the same period the radio serial was active.

The show doesn't have the well-documented production history of the American network serials — no confirmed cast list, no sponsor records, no clear network affiliation in the available sources. What it has is the source material, the chapter format, and 52 episodes built around two brothers who can't escape each other no matter how far apart they travel.
